Breakfast at the Breakers, September 28, 2011

[dcs_p]Business meet at the Breakers in Palm Beach. Victor and I took the scenic route; A1A from Delray to Palm Beach. It’s slow going, even in the off season, but well worth it. Anyway, we’re meeting a gent from Jersey who wants to get in on a project I’ve got going in Manalapan. The deals all on the up and up, and I’m looking for investors who can put money on the table without the Feds swooping in to grab it. So we meet the guy in The Circle Restaurant, which is pretty awesome, with a Renaissance theme and outstanding ocean views. [/dcs_p] My Jersey pal is a little less impressive. For one, he’s got the whole look going–like he’s auditioning for a rerun on The Soprano’s. Dyed black hair and snakeskin shoes, a gold serpentine chain and black silk jacket. Did I mention it’s breakfast? Before we sit down I already know I don’t want his money, but I let him talk. He says the F-word a dozen times, and then he starts dropping names like a glad-handing pol, and I wonder … is this guy for real?

Andrea’s, September 22, 2011

dcs_p]Dinner at Andrea Apuzzo’s place in Metairie–my former hometown outside of New Orleans. Andrea’s is a class act, a swank dining-room with intimate lighting, and the food is some of the best you’ll get in this town. Some of the waiters have an attitude, but they’re not like that with me. So it’s me and Victor, my cousin, Anthony, and a couple of guys I do business with. We’ve got two bottles of Chianti going, along with the calamari, mussels, and vongole. We’re in no hurry to order, enjoying the appetizers, and having a swell time until the Feds show.[/dcs_p]Somehow, they finagle their way to the next table, two stiffs in cheap suits, a glass of the lightest, cheapest wine for one, his partner drinking Coke. I’m pretty sure they’re following Anthony and not me, but after all these years and the grand jury indictments that fizzled in the courtroom, you’d think they would have moved on to bigger fish. But the Feds have a little bit of the conspiracy theory bug. Scraping the barrel and coming up empty, they always think there’s more. How else can they justify the frivolous wasting of taxpayers money?[/dcs_p][dcs_p]Andrea’s was written in the voice of Patricia Bellomo’s main character, mobster Louie Morelli. Seven Year Itch, September 17, 2011

[dcs_p]My son, Tony, tells me he’s got a girl. After the Craigslist hooker tried to blackmail him, I hope he’s using a little common sense with this one, but I have my doubts. Tony’s a great kid, and he was going to do everything right, but after seven years of marriage and two kids, he’s finding out it’s not so easy. It doesn’t help that my daughter-in-law is a nag, and that the house is always a mess, despite twice weekly maid service and a professional sitter. So after years of playing by the rules, Tony’s suddenly on the make.[/dcs_p] I’m not averse to a little R&R, and I certainly didn’t set a good example, but I can see right off  he’s making mistakes. First of all, he’s way too involved. On a two day jaunt to Vegas last week, he spent more time calling his girl than he did playing blackjack. We’re trying to have a boy’s weekend, and he’s walking around with his phone in hand, acting like a lovesick kid, and now I’m worried he’s going to lose his marriage.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]Seven Year Itch is a little anecdote told from the point of view of Patricia Bellomo’s main character, mobster Louie Morelli. Working Girls, September 9, 2011

[dcs_p]Franco had a swank party last night–supposedly in honor of some pop-star who’s doing the diva round, but I never heard of the girl, and I wasn’t impressed when I met her. Victor thought she looked anorexic, but then, most of these girls do. Anyway, Franco had top-notch entertainment, and we ordered some Dom, sitting upstairs in the VIP suite when a couple of working girls showed. They were lovely Eastern European girls with bad English and beautiful bodies.  Stood-up by their dates, they wanted to hang with my group–although none of my guys were buying.[/dcs_p]Victor has a soft spot for these third world hustlers, and he got them drunk on Dom while listening to their life stories. They wanted to give him a private party, but he refused. He says they’re too young and pretty, and they shouldn’t be selling their bodies. I heard him say he’s going to help one of them get an extended VISA and a regular job, but I think that’s the champagne talking. At least, I hope it is. Victor’s getting too sentimental.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]Working Girls was written in the voice of Patricia Bellomo’s main character, mobster Louie Morelli. Cayman Islands, August 30, 2011

[dcs_p]Cayman Islands today to do a little banking. The thing with having money–and not all of it honestly come by–is that you have to find places to put it. So I have a meet with an international financier this morning, a man I first met when I was involved with the diamond trade. Yes, it was lucrative and pretty safe until the Asians got involved. But it’s a different world today, and I can’t help feeling grateful that I came of age in an era when crime still paid.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]Cayman Islands is a little anecdote told from the point of view of Patricia Bellomo’s mobster, Louie Morelli. Hurricane Hysteria, August 25, 2011

[dcs_p]Angie and Stella are in a panic because of Hurricane Irene, but now it looks as though the storm is moving north, northeast of us. Too bad for the Bahamas–they’re getting blasted today. And too bad for Angie, who plans to host a ladies luncheon on our terrace tomorrow. I already told her, “Baby, move it inside,” but she has some kind of tropical theme planned and has her heart set on outdoor dining and an Atlantic view.[/dcs_p]Hoping to be as far away from the house as possible tomorrow, I was intending to take the Stella di Mare south, but they’re forecasting heavy showers and swells and I don’t think I’m taking the Stella anywhere. It’s already raining today, and tomorrow will be more of  the same. But it’s late summer in south Florida and hurricane or no hurricane, it rains.
