Mob Blog: Black Sunday, November 6, 2012

[dcs_p]”It’s the lines, Lou,” my friend says to me. We’re sitting at a breakfast joint on Linton, in Delray Beach.  My friend has had a rough week. He’s down  a hundred grand from Sunday’s action alone. In fact, I just handed him eighty thousand in cash, in a plastic Winn Dixie bag. It killed my buddy to ask me, but he’s been in business forty years, and it’s not the first time I’ve extended a helping hand. I know he’s good for it.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]Vegas is calling what happened on Sunday as “Black Sunday,” because the bettors cleaned up on straights and slips. According to my friend, it’s their fault. “Vegas can’t put out a decent line anymore,” he says, lamenting the days of Jimmy the Greek. He gives a sad shake of his head. “It’s not a good time to be a bookmaker, Lou.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]Patricia Bellomo is the author of the crime thrillers, Stella di Mare and Louie Morelli’s Daughter.  She writes about mobsters and millionaires in South Florida and New Orleans.
