Mobsters in Fiction

Mobsters in Ficton: Louie Morelli:

Mobsters in Fiction: Louie Morelli

“Who is your favorite mobster, Mrs. Bellomo?”

The question was recently posed at a luncheon where I was the keynote speaker. We were discussing mobsters in fiction. This was easy. After all, there is only one fictitious mobster that means anything to me. So I answered without hesitation. “Louie Morelli,” I said.

We were discussing mobsters in fiction.

My audience was expecting this. And they understood. Really, how can Louie not be my favorite mobster? I gave life to him.

The ladies seemed to appreciate this answer. They like Louie, too. In fact, some of them love Louie. It’s true on page and off. Women do love Louie. They love him because he’s a dark hero–an enigmatic mobster who employs violent and, occasionally, underhanded methods. The ladies don’t mind that he cheats on his long-suffering wife. They love Louie because he’s Louie—darkly handsome, filthy rich (not all of it come by honestly), and very powerful. Power is sexy. Louie is sexy.

Look at the comment from one of my female readers:  “Louie is the kind of man we all wish we knew.”

True, Louie is a badass gangster, and he can be cruel, but he’s tender and sweet to those he loves, and he takes care of his women, rescues us from the big bad world for a few hours. He’s our protector.

It’s easy to love Louie because he exists on the pages of my novels: the ultimate bad boy. Operating from a code of honor and possessing a suave sophistication that’s a bit Bondish, as in James Bond, Louie has his share of male admirers, too. He’s a pretty cool cat. And he always gets the girl.

A lot of writers can’t do mobsters. Frequently, mobsters in fiction come off as corny caricatures of Hollywood psychos. Bad to the bone. As an author, I like to explore the nuances in human nature. Truthfully, I think I have a bit of an advantage because I’ve known a lot of Louie Morelli types. Just to be clear: That doesn’t mean I know their secrets. Or even care to know them. Fiction is much more interesting.

 Fiction is much more interesting.

Anyway, as Louie’s creator, I’m totally prejudiced. Louie’s my favorite mobster. How about you?  Do you have a favorite mobster?

Detroit Author Releases Latest Thriller, April 28, 2015

The Prince of Mafia Princes

The Prince of Mafia Princes

Detroit author, Patricia Bellomo, releases her latest thriller, The Prince of Mafia Princes.

Bellomo’s enigmatic mobster, Louie Morelli, goes to war with the Russian mafia in the fourth book of her “Louie Morelli” series.

[dcs_p]Detroit, MI  / April 9, 2015[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Detroit has a long and storied mob history, but local author, Patricia Bellomo, isn’t writing about the Detroit mafia. The daughter of Italian-Americans, Bellomo was raised in a quintessentially Italian neighborhood in Macomb County—a place where bloodlines and familial connections run deep.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

It’s all a little too familiar, which is why Bellomo’s infamous mobster, Louie Morelli, was born and raised in New Orleans, the son of a former crime boss that conspiracy theorists credit with the 35th president’s assassination.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Having spent a lot of time in the Big Easy, the author credits the city with inspiring her. New Orleans also figures prominently in her novels. A previous book, Louie Morelli’s Mistress, was set entirely in the city, providing a lush backdrop for the daring and suspenseful thriller.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Fans of Louie Morelli know that while the mobster maintains a residence on Lake Pontchartrain, he lives in Delray Beach, Florida—another one of Bellomo’s favorite spots. Three books in her series, including The Prince of Mafia Princes, are set in the Sunshine State.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

“South Florida, with its influx of travelers and transients, makes an ideal setting for some of the mischief that befalls Louie and company,” says Bellomo.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

In The Prince of Mafia Princes Bellomo’s savvy mobster aims to protect his son, Tony, who is being blackmailed by a couple of enterprising escorts and their nefarious Russian associates. A sit down with a Miami mob boss is supposed to put an end to Tony’s troubles, but Louie’s inquiries set off a chain reaction, beginning with the brutal murder of a call girl. When Louie’s faithful soldier, Victor DeAngelis, is gunned down on the Fort Lauderdale strip, he sets out to avenge the shooting, only to be waylaid by the FBI.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Like Bellomo’s previous books, The Prince of Mafia Princes is an action-packed thriller. Told entirely from Louie’s point of view, the novel exposes his vulnerable side while highlighting the complex relationship he has with his wife. Though Louie professes to love his wife, he can’t stay faithful to her, and the flings he indulges with gorgeous young women further complicate his marriage.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

“Louie’s a bit of a chauvinist, like an old fashioned Bond,” say Bellomo, adding that her female readers really like Louie. “He’s a dark hero, the ultimate bad boy. Louie is also charming and very, very rich, and this makes him irresistible to women.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

The Prince of Mafia Princes is Bellomo’s fourth book. The series is non-sequential, and you can delve into this latest thriller without having read any of Bellomo’s prior releases, namely Louie Morelli’s Mistress, Stella di Mare, and Louie Morelli’s Daughter.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Snowbird Writes Sizzling South Florida Thriller, April 1, 2015

The Prince of Mafia Princes

The Prince of Mafia Princes

Patricia Bellomo releases her latest South Florida thriller, The Prince of Mafia Princes.

Patricia Bellomo calls the Detroit area home, but her favorite place to be during the brutally cold months of winter is in sunny South Florida. Bellomo and her husband typically stay in several locations in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Occasionally, they trek down to Miami or the Florida Keys. “I love all of Florida,” says Bellomo. “It’s a great state, but I have a preference for South Florida. The lifestyle suits me. There are some really fabulous restaurants up and down the Gold coast, not to mention the shopping and nightlife.”

Fans of Bellomo’s main character, Louie Morelli, know that while the mobster maintains a residence in his hometown of New Orleans, he lives in Delray Beach. Three books in her series, including The Prince of Mafia Princes, are set in the Sunshine State. “Louie lives in Delray Beach, has an office in Boca Raton, and keeps a condo in Miami. Business interests take him to Fort Lauderdale as well as to the Cayman Islands. And he dines at some of the area’s finest restaurants.”

Many scenes in Bellomo’s latest novel are set in area restaurants, including Trattoria Romana and Villagio in Boca Raton, Tramonti’s in Delray Beach, and D’Angelo’s Pizza in Fort Lauderdale. But it’s not all wining and dining. In The Prince of Mafia Princes one of the characters is shot and transported to Broward Medical. Prostitutes ply their trade at a fictitious Fort Lauderdale hotel and a couple of nasty characters meet their end, one of them in the wine cellar of a fabulous Star Island mansion.

“South Florida, with its influx of travelers and transients, makes an ideal setting for some of the mischief that befalls Louie and company,” says Bellomo.

In The Prince of Mafia Princes Louie aims to protect his son, who is being blackmailed by an enterprising escort and her nefarious Russian associates. Things escalate after Louie’s faithful soldier, Victor DeAngelis, is gunned down on the Fort Lauderdale strip.

Like Bellomo’s previous books, The Prince of Mafia Princes is an action-packed thriller. Told entirely from Louie’s point of view, the novel reveals his vulnerable side while highlighting the complex relationship he has with his wife. Though Louie professes to love his wife, he won’t stay faithful to her, and the flings he indulges with gorgeous young women further complicate their marriage.

The Prince of Mafia Princes is Bellomo’s fourth book. The series is non-sequential, and you can delve into this latest mafia thriller without having read any of Bellomo’s prior releases, namely Louie Morelli’s Mistress, Stella di Mare, and Louie Morelli’s Daughter.

All of Bellomo’s books can be purchased online via Amazon or Barnes and Noble’s websites or at your neighborhood bookstore. The novels are available in print, as well as on all digital formats, including Kindle, Nook, and ibooks.

Mob Blog: Books and Pasta, October 3, 2014[/dcs_p]

[dcs_p]Pasta e Pasta is hosting Macomb County author, Patricia Bellomo, at their Chesterfield store on Wednesday, October 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

The founder of Pasta e Pasta, Carlo DeAngelis, is a fan of Bellomo’s. “I’ve read every one of Patricia’s books,” say DeAngelis, who gets a kick out of the fact that he shares a surname with Bellomo’s character, Victor DeAngelis. Of course, Pasta e Pasta’s DeAngelis has little in common with Bellomo’s audacious Victor, who is definitely on the “muscle” end of things. [/dcs_p][dcs_p]

What Bellomo’s character and Pasta e Pasta’s founder do have in common is a love of food, and a talent for preparing it. According to Bellomo, “They’re both awesome cooks.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Carlo and his daughter, Carla DeAngelis, work as a team. Carla also happens to be the owner of Pasta e Pasta. Menu items prepared on site and available for purchase are old family recipes. Pasta is king, whether it’s in the form of lasagna, cannelloni, stuffed shells or ravioli. The DeAngelis’s also make a variety of homemade sauces and soups, distributing their products to local groceries and Italian markets. Except for the dry noodles and sauces, most items are frozen.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Bellomo’s suspense thrillers feature Italian characters. “They love to eat,” says the author. Inevitably, in every book there is a scene or two in which Victor is cooking a meal. Frequently, spaghetti is on the menu, with some kind of sauce simmering on the stove. And, like the real DeAngelis’s, Victor uses all natural ingredients.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

“Because of Victor’s superb culinary skills, many of my readers assume I’m a good cook,” says Bellomo.  “But, the truth is, I’m too busy writing to cook. My passion is books.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

That’s why Bellomo is doing a Books and Pasta night at the Chesterfield store. It’s meet the author, buy a book, get a taste of Italy. And it’s for a good cause, with fifteen percent of all proceeds being donated to American Breast Cancer Foundation.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Pasta e Pasta is located at 48712 Gratiot, in Chesterfield Township, just south of 22 Mile in the Kingston Plaza.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Bellomo’s books include Louie Morelli’s Mistress, Stella di Mare, and Louie Morelli’s Daughter. All books are available on Amazon.com,  in print and digital form. Also available at most bookstores and on all e-readers.  Also available overseas via AmazonUK and AmazonEU.
