Bellomo’s Miami Beach Thriller Gets New Look

[dcs_p]Released in 2010, Patricia Bellomo’s Miami Beach mob thriller, Stella di Mare, was her first published book even though it ranks second (chronologically) in her “Louie Morelli” series. A year later Bellomo yanked the book, made a few necessary revisions, and re-released it. But the cover, contracted through an outfit she met at a writer’s conference in Orlando, didn’t cut it. [/dcs_p][dcs_p]

“It was not emblamatic of the story,” says Bellomo. “I’m a perfectionist, a master of the rewrite. I’ve got a great story here, a classic Miami Beach thriller. My previous cover didn’t do it justice so I hooked up with Karrie Ross of Be It Now/Book Cover Designer and she designed this gem for me. I’m excited because the cover captures the mood of the book as well as the personality of my main character, mobster Louie Morelli. It’s just so Louie.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Louie Morelli is not pictured, but the cover of this glitzy Miami Beach thriller is quintessentially Louie, highlighting his love and appreciation for a beautiful woman and giving us a glimpse of his yacht, the “Stella di Mare.” The waters of Biscayne Bay yield to one of Miami’s numerous bridges. At the top is the magnificent “blue diamond,” which is central to the plot–a stolen blue diamond recovered in the swank Miami Beach hotel Louie acquires by duplicitous means. On the back of the cover (not shown here) is the shadowy outline of a gun, which is very symbolic of Louie.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Working at the hotel is hot babe, Tara Evans. Tara never planned on getting involved with a married man, but when Louie takes over the hotel, Tara falls hard for the charismatic mobster, rushing headlong into a hot affair. Things heat up after Louie discovers that the hotel’s former proprietor, Franco Santia, has been hustling hot diamonds. When the blue diamond is discovered in one of the hotel’s guest rooms, Franco and his creepy pal, Manny, are desperate to get it back. After Manny assaults Tara, Louie “persuades” Franco to betray him. Then he devises a scam involving a famous filmmaker, an eccentric diamond dealer, a mysterious hit man, and his lovely lady, Tara.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Stella di Mare is available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Book is available in print and digital for all e-readers.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Bellomo’s series is non-sequential. Her latest mafia thriller is The Prince of Mafia Princes, released on April 1, 2015. Previous books include Louie Morelli’s Mistress and Louie Morelli’s Daughter.

In Louie’s words …[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

News Café, in South Beach. We’re sitting curbside with Victor’s bookmaker, a character if there ever was one. Victor’s bookmaker is pushing eighty. He’s an old time book, with a mane of shaggy gray hair and bright blue eyes. His skin’s a little weathered—this is South Florida, but other than the skin damage, Victor’s bookmaker doesn’t look his age.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Victor’s into his book for thirty gee’s, slipping an envelope to him beneath the table.  Victor’s the loser, so the tradition is the bookmaker buys, even if it is just bacon and eggs. And bread pudding with vanilla sauce, which is what Victor always gets when we come here.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

It’s a mild day, with a low bank of scudding clouds blowing in from the Atlantic. It’s December in Miami, and we’ve got the usual bimbo mix on the sidewalks clashing with suntanned coeds and middle-aged Germans. There’s a lot of eye candy, and we’re all looking, even the bookmaker.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

He tells us women have been his downfall. Being that he’s on his fifth wife, and she’s forty years younger than him, I’d have to agree. “At my age, I’m still paying child support,” the bookmaker says. “Imagine that. I’ll never be able to retire.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

“Well, you’re doing pretty good this year.” Victor says. “Another week like last week, and I’ll be able to retire you.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

The bookmaker laughs. “Believe it or not, I had more winners than losers last week. The lines Vegas puts out are garbage nowadays. I miss the old days.” He sighs, thinking back to a time when being a sports book was easy. “I used to write three million on a weekend back then, and nobody bothered you. Now you’ve got cowboy cops busting ten dollar bettors.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

[dcs_p]   In Louie Morelli’s words …  [/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Did I say the Russian’s make me nervous? They’re unpredictable, these new Miami Beach mobsters, with their expensive Cristal and low priced prostitutes. Unfortunately, the way business is today, I’m obliged to meet with them every now and then.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

My venue of choice is my own nightclub, Franco’s, which is a Miami Beach favorite, even for Miami’s new Russian mobsters. I meet a couple of them up in the VIP lounge, where Franco pours the Cristal and Victor offers Montecristo’s.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

It’s a civilized meet, and I’m not expecting trouble, but the Russian’s like to show their muscle. I think they’re amused that I’m so low key, but then, they’re in a much more dangerous line of work than I am, dealing with Middle Eastern fanatics and South American sociopaths. Being a patriot, I object to some of their practices, but then, what they do is their business. As long as it doesn’t encroach on mine. But, occasionally, these foreign-born Miami Beach mobsters come to me for a deal or a favor. And sometimes, like today, it’s me who is looking for information.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Fortunately, the information is provided without a price, as a gesture of goodwill. I graciously accept. After all, it wouldn’t do to offend my unsavory friends. So I let Franco pour the Cristal, and then he brings in the working girls, and the Russians are happy. [/dcs_p][dcs_p]

In Louie Morelli’s words ….[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

I’m in Miami Beach with Victor. It’s the weekend before the 4th of July. We’re on the Stella di Mare, which is in a slip at the Miami Beach Marina. Storm clouds are bunched up on the edge of the horizon, blowing up from the Caribbean, but this doesn’t deter two bikini-clad young women from sunning themselves on the deck of my eighty-foot Hatteras. The girls just want to have fun.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

The ladies are thirtyish. One of them—Victor’s date, Molly—works at Franco’s, where we went last night. Molly introduced me to her friend, Heather, a recent transplant from Kansas City. Upon introduction, Heather gave me a meaningful little smile and said, “I just love Miami Beach.” [/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Heather has fulfilled her purpose for being on my boat. She’s a nice girl, although she’s a little anxious. Trying too hard, I suspect. Heather has made it clear she wants to see me again. She knows I have deep pockets. She’s heard a well-founded rumor that I signed over a chunk of prime Miami Beach real estate to my last girlfriend. “Baby, don’t believe everything you hear,” I told her. “There were extenuating circumstances.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

It is true that I bequeathed the renowned Walker Hotel on Miami Beach to Tara. She is a very lovely lady with whom I had a very hot affair. (Stella di Mare) The transfer of Miami real estate to Tara was a rare occurrence. In fact, I can emphatically state that it will never happen again. But this doesn’t mean that I can’t show a girl a good time.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

Heather and Molly are drinking Bloody Mary’s. Victor’s reading the Miami-Herald, the edges of his newspaper flapping in the breeze. I’ve been on the phone, talking business. Now I hit the End button on the smart phone my daughter insisted I upgrade to, and which I really can’t stand, and look upwards. The clouds are moving in. It’s time to go.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

“Victor,” I say. “Tell them we’re ready.”[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

The Stella’s engines are already running. Victor goes inside to tell the captain I’ve given the word. Molly pouts. She’s due on shift at Franco’s in a few hours and can’t go with us. But Heather will travel as far as Fort Lauderdale, where we’ll stop for lunch. From there I’ll send her home in a cab.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]

I glance at my watch. It’s high noon on a Saturday in Miami Beach. My wife doesn’t expect me home until midnight. I have the whole day to play.[/dcs_p][dcs_p]
